President Yoon

Yoon Suk Yeol was elected president of South Korea on March 9, 2022. Following his election, South Korean citizens often turned to protests as a way to vocalize their opinions oftentimes against him or his wife. Notably, his administration's policies, particularly those involving labor laws and relations with North Korea, have sparked large-scale protests.

On December 3, 2024 Yoon declared martial law. It was the first time in 40 years South Korea would be under martial law. Outraged, confused, and terrified citizens turned to streets of Seoul to protest for his impeachment. Finally, on December 14, 2024 South Korea’s parliament voted to impeach President Yoon.

I captured Yoon’s presidency from beginning to the supposed “end.” The first few photos were taken in early 2022 when Yoon and fellow party members were campaigning for votes. I experienced overwhelming waves of love and support for Yoon on this cold winter day. The next few photos depict the controversies behind Yoon’s presidency. For the past two years, I visited weekly protests and first-hand engaged with protestors of the political spectrum to observe multiple perspectives. The last few photos were taken just outside the National Assembly in Seoul, South Korea on the day of Yoon’s impeachment. A sea of citizens came together to celebrate Yoon’s impeachment with songs, cheers, and tears.
